over cautious or just stupid

Post  nikthebad on Sat Jan 16, 2010 12:23 am

3rd out of 20 in a 4k gtd at the mo on TGF.

blinds are 400 and 800, I've got about 22K.

Full ring and utg is 2nd in chips with 28K ish and raises to 6k. He seems super tight and has only played premium hands that we've seen. I've got AK off and think about it and fold.

Is this stupid?

nb: I have been drinking Smile

This is a spot where a lot of players make mistakes - things like 1010 and AK in mid pos with a big stack. If you were sitting 15th/20, or if the big stack was opening all the time with trash, then it becomes playable. But here all the information given points to a definite fold - he's tight, but made a huge raise from early position, and is the only person on table who can stack you. Why get involved in a big pot here when youre likely either flipping or in deep trouble. Stay out of bother and fold imo, youre in a great position, why risk it all in one hand, could definitely find a better spot.

And congrats on another nice win! wpwp!

I totally agree with Rick here.
So many players make what they regard as "standard" moves without proper regard to the specific situation.

If you do a mathematical calculation of all your opponents possible holdings (guesswork) and all his responses to over agressive actions by you (more guesswork) and then apply that to playing the same situation against him another 1000 times (which will never happen in your life time)you will probably be able to justify a re-raise or shove.

The only real situation you ought to think about (unless you have difficulty thinking in general) is the one you are actually faced with and even if your actual decision could have been more productive given his actual hand, the decision you made to fold was sound and based on logical reasoning and on that basis cannot be faulted (even if disagreed with).

I think you made a decent decision and well done with the win.

I disagree, but wp, Nick - fantastic result. I'd have shoved, with that many left. This, however, is based on the fact that AK would be the best hand I'd have seen all tournament. When you run like me, AK is AA.
